What Is Crazy Go Lucky?

Crazy Go Lucky is a company and brand of products that is run by me, Michael De Jesus, from Union City, California. I started the company in 2006, and originally had made it as a means to make an online portfolio for my art. Over time, I eventually realized I could use the company as a brand to make new art. The art and designs I make here consist of such characteristics such as cute, colorful, funny, nerdy, and sometimes strange. The designs are made for various outlets. Outlets like web, print and apparel (which I started in the summer of 2008). As of April 2009, I decided to officially designate Crazy Go Lucky as it's own entity outside of my design portfolio. I felt that Crazy Go Lucky already had it's own defined style and had a range of it's own characters that existed in it's branding. So I decided to make Crazy Go Lucky it's own entity and my personal portfolio can be found here.

Why The Name Crazy Go Lucky?

To be honest, I am bad with coming up with names. I thought up a lot of names but many were either taken or too weird. Also, I had already acquired the nickname "Crazy" Mike from college, and part of me wanted to implement some of that in the company name. So I just went and looked on google for name ideas and came upon "Crazy Go Nuts University" from the Internet cartoon Strong Bad. So I started thinking of names that were along those lines and then the term "happy go lucky" popped into my head and that's pretty much how the name came about. The name is pretty much "crazy" + "happy go lucky", which I think fits since that's the kinda attitude that fits where I want to go with this endeavor. Also for the hundredth time, the happy go lucky part was not inspired from Family Guy. Sure, I watch Family Guy but the word came into my head without the show's influence.

So Crazy Go Lucky Is A Company You Run?

Precisely, Crazy Go Lucky is a company I run and own. Initially, efforts were made to make this company seem more corporate with a staff, but after some time I had realized the approach was not good. The Crazy Go Lucky has no staff. Crazy Go Lucky is a one man operation. I do not have a fancy office. My office is just a room in my mom's house with a desktop computer and a TV from the 1980's that I used to play NES on. For the online store, there is no massive warehouse where I keep all the Crazy Go Lucky products. I pretty much run operations of the online store in closet in the downstairs bedroom of my mom's house. Really folks, there is nothing special or amazing going on here. It's just one guy, a desktop computer, and a closet that make up Crazy Go Lucky.

Why Is Your Mascot A Monkey?

I like bananas and thought the word monkey itself was funny. Also as the side note, one of the original names I was thinking of naming the company was "Monkey Kill Bear".

Why Is Your Logo A Spider With A Peace Sign?

I like Spider-Man and I do the peace sign/Asian pose a lot. It just pretty much worked out like that.

What's With All The Light Blue And Green?

Light blue and green is what I selected to be the company colors. While I don't exactly use the same shade each time I just like to maintain the pairing of some kind of light/bright blue and some kind of green as the Crazy Go Lucky colors.

What Is A Lucky One?

It's basically what I call the followers, fans, and friends of Crazy Go Lucky.

I Think I'm Good At Graphic Design, Do You Want To Hire Me As A Designer?

Even though I have seen a ton of artists much better than me, the answer is no. The whole point of Crazy Go Lucky is to promote and sell my own designs and artwork. It wouldn't really make sense for me to sell works of others. Maybe we can do a collaboration, but that's pretty much it.

Hey I Have An Idea For A Shirt, Could You Make Me A Custom Shirt?

Hell no. I don't screen print. Stop asking me this, damn it. But to be completely serious, no I do not have the capabilities or equipment to provide such a service.

So What's In Store For Crazy Go Lucky?

If Crazy Go Lucky starts to pick and gain more of a fan base and more income is made available, lots of things could happen. Obviously the first thing would be more shirts, but I'm also interested in making other things under the Crazy Go Lucky name. Things like hoodies, belts, new button designs, button packs, more stickers, vinyl figures, action figures, shoes, almost anything is possible really. I could pretty much do anything as long as I felt it made sense to Crazy Go Lucky's direction and market.

Why Should I Believe In Crazy Go Lucky?

Because if you truly believe in something, somehow it all works out.

Who is "Crazy" Mike?

I am "Crazy" Mike. "Crazy" Mike was a nickname I had acquired in college because I was always hyperactive, jumping around, and random at PCN(Pilipino Cultural Night) class. So the guys there just started calling me "Crazy" Mike and the name just stuck ever since. While the nickname is still used, it has evolved into (in some cases) an exaggerated persona of myself. A persona where I have no inhibitions and allow myself to be more goofy, random, strange, inept, care free, and confused than I usually am.

What Are Your Influences?

I have many influences, so here is them listed out by category:

Stylistically: anime, cartoons, video games, comic book art, Japanese and Asian art, current trends in the rock music scene, Nintendo, Sanrio, Tokidoki, Kid Robot

Business Wise: Johnny Cupcakes, Linty Fresh

I was born on March 22, 1984. Do the math.

No, what makes you think I can speak Chinese? I only understand English and most Tagalog words.

Did You Go To College?

I went to CAL State Hayward (before the name was changed to East Bay). I majored in Art and had concentrations in digital graphics and multimedia. I also minored in Filipino and Filipino American Studies.

Do You Have A Job?

I used to have a job at an electronic store in Fremont, California. But the job sucked and I quit at the end of January 2008. So right now I'm technically unemployed. I know what you're thinking, "isn't Crazy Go Lucky your job?" Well to be honest I would like to say it is, but I currently don't make much money from it. So I can't really go and call it what I do for a living quite yet.

Where Are You From?

I currently reside in Union City, California. I was born in Manila and have also lived in the California cities of Daly City and Fremont.

I don't drink, I don't smoke, and I don't do drugs. For the most part I don't care if you do any of these things, but I just never felt the need to do any of these things so please don't try to rag on me for it.

What's With The Violent And Bloody Stuff That Some Things From Crazy Go Lucky Have?

My sense of humor has been derived from years of watching the Simpsons, Cartoon Network Adult Swim, Family Guy, American Dad, Dave Chappelle, and Reno 911. I'm not a violent person, nor do I condone violence, it's just for some reason it's kinda funny in some contexts.
